Thursday Thirteen: Studio Ghibli
13 Studio Ghibli Movies We Love
Hiyao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli is as big or bigger than Disney here in the U.S. We own these thirteen (and probably others) in both the original Japanese and the American dubbed releases. We’ve watched most of their movies multiple times and the kids really enjoy them as well, even the less kid-i-fied ones. The exception is “Grave of the Fireflies” — this is one of the best and most depressing movies ever made. We did not let the kids watch that one yet. |
It’s interesting to see which elements of the Japanese DVD covers or movie posters (shown on the right side of each image pair) are brought over to the states. It’s interesting how the American ones try to include the whole story while the Japanese ones go for one poignant moment.
DH went Tokyo last fall and visited the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. Lucky bum. Today’s TT logo is one of the photos he took of the giant robot statue on the museum roof. You may recognize him from “Laputa” Or “Castle in the Sky” as it’s more commonly called here.

Okay, I’m really going to have to borrow someone’s DVDs soon. Everyone I know seems to be watching them except for me.
I’m taking notes!
I’ve never heard of any of these either. I love the covers.
The covers are gorgeous. (And yeah…I’ve never seen ’em either. Time to stock up on popcorn.)
I love Hiyao Miyazaki’s anime. Didn’t he do “Howl’s Moving Castle” too? Happy TT!
Man, I gotta get cultured. Yeah, good covers.

Look what I just learned. Very interesting. I will look for some of these. Thanks!
I always love the title changes from Great Britain to the U.S. It seems to change from one continent to the next.
Cool TT, Kaige.

i’m not a big anime fan. sorry!
I’ve actually heard of three of these (4, 6 and 10), but have not seen them. Happy T13!

Interesting list!
I actually have a few on my Netflix queue. Why not try something new, right?
Oh, ugh! Now that’s another thing I’m going to have to look into, because my curiosity won’t just let it lay. Just great. Thanks Kaige! *g*
Those are all new to me. Thank you for bringing them to our attention.
I really loved Spirited Away and enjoyed Princess Mononoke too. I’ll have to check out the others. Happy TT!!

I’ve got no clue when it comes to anime. My daughter might, but I kinda think she’s more into her own art thing online these days. I hadn’t realized it was so big there was a museum for it in Japan! Cool TT!
Whew! I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who’s unfamiliar with these. *scribbles note to check them out*
I like your list of 13. [And I read your new post about writing a romance novel. Good luck with that if you try…thanks for the visit yesterday, I couldn’t get back to you until now because of strong storms moving through our area]
